Mirabilis multiflora (Showy Desert Four O'Clock)
CONPS: When its numerous red-purple flowers open in the late afternoon, the showy four o’clock is a show stopper. The five yellow anthers and purple pistil are long and protrude beyond the flower. The low, sprawling plant is from 1-3 feet tall and equally broad with large triangular or oval leaves that are opposite each other on the stem. The plant served many purposes for Native Americans. The Keres were said to have used the dried leaves as a tobacco substitute. According to Whiting, the roots of the plant were used by Hopi healers to induce visions to aid in diagnoses. The Tewa and Navajo used the roots to treat swellings and the Zuni found it useful as an Alka-Seltzer substitute. It is a beautiful garden plant that is extremely drought tolerant and will grow in shade or sun. Blooms April to September.
